Recommendation: Definitely a pick if you like fantasy fiction involving vampires, archangels, angels, super humans and humans.
Archangel's Prophecy is the eleventh book in the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh released in October of 2018. The story-line of the series comes back to Raphael - Archangel ruling North America - and his consort, Elieanora "Elena" Deveraux.
The stories in this series are set in a world where it is ruled by Archangels with Vampires, Angels and Humans with extra-ordinary powers as their team serving them. One of the powerful Archangels is Archangel Raphael who rules North America from The Tower in Manhattan, New York along-side his consort – Elieanora "Elena" Deveraux and his Seven. There are nine other Archangels who rule the different regions of the world. They are immortals who have lived thousands and thousands of centuries and rule the world filled with Angels, Vampires, Guild Hunters and Humans. The plots in the series primarily revolve around Archangel Raphael, his consort Elena and his Seven.
It has been two and a half years since the last resurgence in The Cascade, a phenomenon where a power-surge would occur among the archangels ruling the world as well as cause random cataclysmic occurrences. Elena fears that it may very well be happening again, when her routine hunt of a rogue vampire turned into the very vampire being sucked into a sink-hole filled with lava.
As many other cataclysmic happenings are seen around the world, the most unusual phenomenon was that Elena was regressing from being immortal. An effect of Cascade? Or is it something more sinister? Raphael can do no other but ensure that no harm come to the love of his immortal life.
I had expected Nalini Singh to follow the story-arc following the 9th book Archangel's Heart in this plot, but still have another book for story-arc following the 10th book Archangel's Viper. However, she combines both story-arcs in this plot, again forming one thread for readers to follow.
Although her books can be read as their own or as a series, none of her books ever had it split into parts in this particular Guild Hunter Series. However, in this book, she kind of makes it into parts with one sheet of poetry from a long forgotten archangel in between the chapters.
All of the characters that Nalini Singh spins in her tales, in this Guild Hunter series are lovable and unique. However there are a few that always get closer to the reader's heart than most, and sometimes those are not necessarily the lead characters too. Similarly, for me, in the Guild Hunter series, apart from Ilium and Aodhan, Ashwini and Janvier had been two other characters that I always loved to watch them. Perhaps that is the same with Nalini since she has already penned two stories centering on them - in the first e-book Angels' Pawn and the seventh book in the series Archangel's Shadows.
She has a girls night and a boys night for Raphael and Elena, making them a tad bit mortal. Despite the perils they face, the beauty of their love, the bond they have with each other, the loyalty they have towards the people they love similar to how the people show towards each other, is well depicted by Nalini. Reader forgets they are on earth and instead are living side by side in the Guild Hunter's world.
Nalini has smartly weaved into scenes from the previous books and connecting them with this plot giving it a feel that one is living the lives of these character, like following each day of their lives. Connecting them that way added a smooth flow through and through the series. We see plot-lines from the beginning of the series popping here and there in this book though.
She has given us another intense plot filled with Angels, Archangels, Vampires and Guild Hunters facing threats to everyone, unraveling prophecies and writing their own destinies. And yes, she left the plot in a cliff-hanger. Too bad, we have to wait for at least another 7 months before the next book comes out. I wish when she has a cliff-hanger ending, she create the next book sooner. :) Cant wait for the next one in the series to be out soon.
Another thrilling adventure in the world of Archangels, Angels, Vampires, Guild Hunters and Humans that keeps you gripping till the end.
1. Plot reveals:
a. A new Angel, Miuxu, appears in this plot. The way Nalini introduced her and expanded her character in just one plot, makes me as a reader think there is more to Miuxu than what we have seen so far.
a. Characters readers are looking forward to their own story lines:
i. Marcia Blue, first introduced in Archangel’s Legion – a 100 year old vampire is interested in another vampire, Jonas – Elena’s financial manager - per Archangel's Heart.
ii. Suyin, first introduced in Archangel's Enigma, niece of Lijuan, a legendary architect.
iii. Montogomery – Raphael’s butler – is married to Sivya – Angel in charge of Raphael’s kitchen. First introduced in Archangel’s Legion.
b. Illium - the blue-winged angel and one of Raphael's Seven - is growing fast in his power due to The Cascade. More of Illium's past is revealed in Archangel's Viper indicating that he would eventually become an archangel - courtesy of effects of The Cascade - and that Aodhan would follow as his second.
c. There is still mystery surrounding what happened to Aodhan. We got to see more of Aodhan’s past, about his family and his near-death incident in Archangel's Heart. I was hoping Nalini had Aodhan as her central topic in the next book. Instead it had become about Venom as we had seen in Archangel's Viper. So hoping that her next one would be about Aodhan or may be it would be about Illium first and then have Aodhan.
d. Aodhan has been residing at the Refuge aiding his sister, Imalia, who has given birth to a baby boy, while Illium continues to be at The Tower. Will Nalini spin them as brothers? Or make them something similar to Raphael and Dmitri? or make them a pair? Would be interesting, although I don’t want to read a Gay / Lesbian plot. (Please god! No!, Nalini!)
e. Is Michaela - Archangel of Central Europe - pregnant by Dahariel, her vampire or by Uram - the Archangel of Russia before he went mad?
f. Nalini left Mahiya Geet's - wife of Jason, one of Raphael's Seven - story open-ended with regards to her powers and how they would enhance. Her story can be read in Archangel's Storm.
g. Elena’s Guard: We get the first glimpse of a major portion of Elena’s Guard in Archangel's Heart.
i. Izak – “Izzy”, a fledgling angel who was hurt badly during The Falling.
ii. Janvier – a 245 year old free-vampire and loyal to Raphael.
iii. Ashwini Taj – Guild Hunter born turned Vampire, Elena’s friend and mate to Janvier.
iv. Vivek Kapur – Former Computer genius and eyes and ears of The Guild though paralyzed from shoulders and below, turned vampire by Aodhan - one of Raphael's Seven. Now as a vampire he had regained some of his mobility in his arms and upper body.
v. Sameon "Sam" - a very young angel who was a constant companion to Elena in The Refuge, craves to be part of Elena's guard.
h. In Archangel's Viper, Dmitri places Holly under Janvier – a 245 year old Vampire – and Ashwini Taj – a Guild Hunter turned Vampire, wife of Janvier, to train her and make her a better “other”. A bountiful of powers are awakening in Holly as well.
3. Grammatical / Factual / Location / Historical / Character Errors:
a. On Pg. 148, Line 9, it should be "…be in shambles…"
