Book Critique 2016 – 04/25/2016: Archangel's Consort (#3)

Continuing with the critiques I started in 2015, here is the next in series – a book review.

Prologue: Go here.

For review of all books in the Guild Hunter series: Go here.

Stars: 3.5 / 5

Recommendation: Definitely a pick if you like fantasy fiction involving vampires, archangels, angels and humans.

Archangel's Consort is the third installment in the Guild Hunter Series by written by Nalini Singh published in February of 2011. The first book of Nalini Singh I had read was the 7th in this series. I liked it enough to look for other books in the series. I am yet to find the first two books, so for now reading whatever books I am finding in the series. These books can be read as stand-alone since the history of the series is briefly glimpsed in every book. However I like to read the series from start to end usually. :) Anyways here is my take on this book.

The stories in this series are set in a world where it is ruled by Archangels with Vampires, Angels and Humans with extra-ordinary powers as their team serving them. The Cadre that is the council of Archangels seats 10 powerful archangels who share the world in ten different continents and rule them, hold sway over the immortals and mortals alike. Archangels are immortals who have lived thousands and thousands of centuries. Angels are born or made but have lived centuries. Vampires are almost-immortals and are Made mostly and some have lived as long as the Archangels. They serve the Archangels and have contracts with their angelic masters that they have to live by. They use humans as cattle for feeding on blood. Guild Hunters are humans with special powers who are tasked to capture Vampires who have gone rogue. They have psychic and physical powers which are extra-ordinaire.

In this book, the plot revolves around Elena Deveraux and her Archangel Raphael who rules North America with New York as his base. Elena was a vampire hunter and part of the guild before she was made into an angel by Raphael. That story is covered in the first two books as mentioned a few times in this plot. Now Rapheal and Elena have returned to New York after facing Archangel of China, Lijuan - an Ancient too - and the destruction of Beijing, almost losing their lives. They are settling themselves as a couple - Elena to be introduced to the world as Raphael's consort, something similar to wife in human terms. All seems to go well although Elena is still battling her nightmares, her past, trying to assimilate being an angel and at the same time work for the Guild. However, she is tasked to find a vampire who had attacked a girl's school. A roommate of Elena's step-sister Evelyn is found murdered by a vampire gone rogue. Elena worried that her step-sister just might be in the cross-hairs of a vampire who is bent on a rampage. Or is she? Or is it Elena in the cross-hairs?

Adding to this are the weird anomalies in weather patterns causing tornadoes, unusual snow patterns and overflowing rivers with thunderstorm filled rains everywhere. Archangels all over the world know that this happens only when an Ancient awakens - an Ancient is one who is more than tens of thousands of years old and had gone to sleep when they grow weary of long immortality. However when an Ancient awakens they may always not be sane. But this time perhaps they are witnessing a rebirth of an Archangel as the Ancient rising is none other than Caliane - mother to Raphael. What worries Raphael and Elena more is how insane would she be when she wakes considering she was the most powerful Archangel of her time and has been on this earth since more than twenty five thousand years. Her insanity could cause a disruption in the Cadre as well as the balance of mortals and immortals everywhere.  That was not the only thing. She is coming back to reclaim her son Raphael and the only one between them is Elena.

Will Elena come to terms with her past and her father? What is the big secret that her father is hiding? Who is killing all these innocents and vampires too? Is Caliane really capable of reaching beyond her sleep and cause the vampires to go rogue? Or is it some other element playing its hand? Will the Seven - Raphael's team of devoted angels and vampires who have dedicated themselves for the safety of Raphael - protect Elena and Raphael for what is coming? But what is coming? Is Caliane as mad as she was before she went to Sleep? What is the fate of the Cadre?

Interesting twists and turns in this world of angels and vampires with humans in the middle. I am curious to see how the life of Elena and Raphael turn into in the next books as well as curious about the lives of Seven and the Hunters of the Guild. Nalini Singh has put life into her characters and makes you part of their family just by reading the book. That is some writing expertise. Pick it up to get transported into a different world and enjoy the stories.
