All the talk about different attires, accessories, style and fashion reminded me of this Shringaar Rasa in Indian Culture. Rasa is a fundamental concept in Indian art, music, dance, poetry, literature, cinema and theater that show the emotional state of one’s expression or mood or feeling. (More here). Shringaar is one of the nine Rasas that depict emotions of erotic or romantic love, beauty and attraction. It could be as simple as getting ready to please your love or as complex as displaying it out there for your love to notice. And this is expressed very beautifully by many Lyricists, Poets and Musicians in Hindi films. A few examples below.

Mann Kyun Behka Re Behka from the 1984 Hindi historical drama film Utsav ( = The Festival). This is a rare duet sung by the Mangeshkar Sisters, Lata and Asha. Music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and Lyrics penned by Vasant Dev. Although the movie won three Filmfare Awards, this was a flop. Yet a few songs remain memorable like this one.

Meri Bindiya Teri Nindiya from the 1991 Hindi film Lamhe ( = Moments). Again another movie that was considered a commercial failure even though it won Filmfare Awards. Yet recently this movie is been considered a classic. Sung by Lata Mangeshkar, the song’s Music was composed by the duo Shiv – Hari and Lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi. The simplicity of the song charmed me where the girl is expressing her beginning feelings of love towards the guy.

Sajna Hai Mujhe Sajna Ke Liye from the 1973 Hindi film Saudagar ( = Merchant / Trader). Again this movie wasn’t a commercial success either, however was choses for Best Foreign Language Film in the 46th Academy Awards. Sung by Asha Bhosle, the song was written and composed by Ravindra Jain.

Sakhi Ri Meraa Man Ulajhe Tan Dole from the 1964 Hindi historical drama film Chitralekha ( = Name of a Girl). Sung by Lata Mangeshkar the song’s Music was composed by Roshan and Lyrics were penned by Sahir Ludhianvi.

Mora Gora Ang Lei Le from the 1963 hit Hindi film Bandini ( = Imprisoned). Sung by Lata Mangeshkar the song’s Music composed by S. D. Burman. This was debut film for Gulzar where he penned Lyrics for this song. Its so surprising and refreshing to see a girl wanting to trade her fair color to Shyam’s (Lord Krishna) darker color. Interesting and something that I would consider for a future post.

Saheb, Biwi Aur Ghulam ( = The Master, The Wife and The Servant) is a 1962 hit Hindi drama film that looks into the fall of Haveli-dom during the British Raj. This was another movie that was also chosen for India’s official entry for 35th Oscars. As the title depicts the movie revolves on those three characters. There would be another post for a detailed review of this movie, however wanted to bring up two songs from the movie that would fall under this Shringaar category. Music was composed by Hemant Kumar and Lyrics were penned by Shakeel Badayuni. First one is Piya Aiso Jiya Mein Sung by Geeta Dutt. Here the Wife is getting ready in anticipation that her husband, the Master, would be home soon.

Next up Na Jao Saiyan Chhudaake Baiyan Sung by Geeta Dutt. Here the “neglected” Wife tries to woo her husband, the Master, back with her charm and sensuality hoping for him to stay home that night as opposed at his mistress’s.
