Pichla | Agla

A classic old melody from the 1955 hit Telugu musical comedy film Missamma ( = Miss Madam) Sung by A. M. Rajah. Music was composed by S. Rajeswara Rao to the Lyrics penned by Pingali Nagendrarao. This is one other movie that would deserves a post for itself which I will be doing one day. However, this one is just for this song and two related ones. This song describes the famouse indecisive nature of a woman with a touch of humor. I don’t think I can translate it to the actual essence, but the translation is in there for my non-Telugu speaking friends.

Before we go to the Lyrics and Translation a few more tidbits about the song:
1) The movie is a multi-starrer with music and comedy blended into it. A classic two heroines and two heroes, one with a mysterious past another with a lively life. A villain who want to thwart everyone’s plans. A well-made story that cant get any better.

2) It also addresses several issues: cross-religious beliefs and tolerances, unemployment, importance of education mainly that just being a graduate of engineering or medicine is not the only route but there are other avenues like music, drawing, etc., touches a bit on how sadhus and saints con the people in the name of religion.

3) Missamma was remade into Hindi and released as Miss Mary in 1957, two years later. This would be another post in itself. However, this song was not part of that movie.

4) Decades later, infact several decades later, the same song without changing neither the lyrics nor the tunes (oh but had to upgrade the tune to meet the modern needs but keeping the basic essence) was used in another hit Telugu film. For the 2001 hit film Khushi ( = Happiness), this song was remade. Sung by Muralidhar, Music composed by Manisharma and Lyrics penned by Pingali Nagendrarao.

5) Lyrics in Romanized Telugu (with Translation):

Avunante Kaadanile Kaadante Avunanile, Avunante Kaadanile Kaadante Avunanile
Aaduvaari Maatalaku Ardhaale Verule, Ardhaale Verule Ardhaale Verule

[Yes Means No, No Means Yes; What A Woman Says Is Different From What It Means,
What A Woman Says Is Different From What It Means, Different From What It Means Different From What It Means]

Aligi Tolagi Nilichinacho
Aligi Tolagi Nilichinacho, Chelimi Jeya Rammanile
Chorava Chesi Rammanucho
Chorava Chesi Rammanucho, Mariyaadaga Pommanile
Aaduvaari Maatalaku Ardhaale Verule, Ardhaale Verule Ardhaale Verule

[If She Stands Away Being Upset, It Means You Need To Be Close To Her
If She Asks You To Come Closer, It Means Respectfully Asking You To Leave.
What A Woman Says Is Different From What It Means, Different From What It Means Different From What It Means]

Visigi Nasigi Kasirinacho
Visigi Nasigi Kasirinacho, Vishayamasalu Ishtamule
Tarachi Tarachi Oosadigina
Tarachi Tarachi Oosadigina, Sarasaminka Chaalanile
Aaduvaari Maatalaku Ardhaale Verule, Ardhaale Verule Ardhaale Verule

[If She Acts Provoked or Riled, It Means She Actually Likes What You Did.
If She Asks Too Much About Something, It Means To End The Romance.
What A Woman Says Is Different From What It Means, Different From What It Means Different From What It Means]

Avunante Kaadanile Kaadante Avunanile, Aaduvaari Maatalaku Ardhaale Verule
Ardhaale Verule Ardhaale Verule

[Yes Means No, No Means Yes; What A Woman Says Is Different From What It Means,
What A Woman Says Is Different From What It Means, Different From What It Means Different From What It Means]
