First time I heard this song was on the Tom and Jerry episode called “Solid Serenade”, a cartoon created in 1946. It was very charming and made me wonder if it was a made up song for the cartoon or a real song used in there. Surprise, Surpise, it was indeed a real song, sung by Louis Jordan in 1944. So, here’s the cartoon version:

Seems to be the original song was No.1 on US Folk/Country Charts that year. Wiki says that this was the only song by an African American artist that reached No.1 until 1969.  Song was co-written by Jordan and Billy Austin. Since then this song has become a kind of cult in Jazz music and has been recorded in various versions by famous artists, remixed by a few and also used on commercials. Isnt that interesting that something that was a success in 1944 is still a classic in 2014.

Lyrics:

I Got A Gal Who's Always Late
Any Time We Have A Date
But I Love Her
Yes I Love Her

I'm Gonna Walk Right Up To Her Gate
And See If I Can Get It Straight
'Cause I Want Her
I'm Gonna Ask Her

Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby
Way You're Acting Lately Makes Me Doubt
Youse Is Still My Baby, Baby
Seems My Flame In Your Heart's Done Gone Out

A Woman Is A Creature That Has Always Been Strange
Just When You're Sure Of What You'll Find
She's Gone And Made A Change

Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby
Maybe Baby's Found Somebody New
Or Is My Baby Still My Baby True

You sure find interesting things all around you :)
Indeed movies (and cartoons) are a great way of getting introduced to lovely songs. I got to hear Por Une Cabeza for the first time when I watched the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie 'True Lies'. Arnold tangoes with Jamie Lee Curtis for this song.

I also heard the same song again when I watched Schindler's List, albeit a slightly different version.

I came across the same song in a third movie, 'Scent of a woman'.

Aah I remember the one in True Lies and Scent of a Woman...but not the Schindler's List...have to watch the movie again to see the scene.

Thanks, life is interesting...so why not look at it in more detail... :) I am glad you appreciate it too.

PS: A post coming soon in next few days that will be dedicated to you...I am hoping you will remember the history behind it... ;)
