05/12/2012: Gongura Tomato Pappu / Sorrel Tomato Dal - Gongura is a very common leafy vegetable grown from the state of Andhra Pradesh in India that I come from. It has a sour taste that reminds you of tamarind and makes amazing pickle. I dont know how to make the picke but I use it to make curries. One of it is this Dal.

Recipe: Pressure cook Masoor Dal into a fine paste. Heat Oil in a pan and add the required Spices for seasoning along with Curry Leaves and Turmeric. After they fry well add chopped Green Chillis, Onions and Ginger Paste. Saute till Onions turn translucent, now add chopped Tomatoes. Once the Tomatoes are semi cooked, add the chopped leaves of Gongura. Simmer and cook under cover until the veggies cook well. Add Salt, little Red Chili Powder and cooked Masoor Dal, mix well. Simmer again and cook on open cover for 5 more minutes. Add water if needed. Remove from flame and serve hot with Rice or Roti.
