Magic In Tunes: 07/13/2015 – Saanjh Ki Bela, Jiya Akela

Tun Tun was the first women comedian in Indian Cinema. However, her career didn’t start as such. She started as the playback singer Uma Devi (her real name) with quite a good success streak until she couldn’t keep up with the competition of new comers like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. She changed her career to acting and got famous as Tun Tun.

Here is one of her song from the movie that was her most accomplished work on her birth anniversary that was celebrated two days ago. From the 1948 hit Hindi classic Chandralekha ( = Name of a Girl) (originally made in Tamil and later remade in Hindi), this song “Saanjh Ki Bela, Jiya Akela” was composed by S. Rajeshwar Rao and Lyrics penned by Bharat Vyas. This movie in itself would be another post for review, but for now, enjoy this melody by Uma Devi A. K. A. Tun Tun.

Lyrics in Romanized Hindi:

Saanjh Ki Bela, Saanjh Ki Bela Jiya Akela
Gun-Gun-Gun Kya Gaaye, Gun-Gun-Gun Kya Gaaye
Main Khadi Akeli, Main Khadi Akeli
Yaad Kisi Ki Aaye Aaye Aaye

Baag Mein Bhanware Jhoom Rahe Hain, Jhoom Rahe Hain
Baag Mein Bhanware Jhoom Rahe Hain, Jhoom Rahe Hain
Kaliyon Ke Munh Choom Rahe Hain, Choom Rahe Hain
More Bhanware Aa Ja Aa Ja Re, More Bhanware Aa Ja Aa Ja Re
Yeh Kali Teri Kumhalaaye, Haay Haay
Saanjh Ki Bela

Ab Na Piya Mujhko Tarasaavo Aavo, Ab Na Piya Mujhko Tarasaavo Aavo
Prem Sudha Barasaao Aavo
Praan Papiha, Praan Papiha Piyaa-Piya Kar
Praan Papiha Piyaa-Piya Kar, Pritam Tujhe Bulaaye

Yeh Jise Dhoondhate Phirte They More Naina, More Naina
Yeh Jise Dhoondhate Phirte They More Naina, More Naina
Woh Yahaan Chhupi Hai More Man Ki Maina, Maina
Hum Rooth Gaye Kuchh Bhi Na Baat Karenge, Baat Karenge
Hum Rooth Gaye Kuchh Bhi Na Baat Karenge, Baat Karenge
Hum Roothne Waalon Ke Nakhre Bhi Sahenge, Sahenge
Koi Pyaar Bhare Nainon Se Hamein Lubhaaye
Koyi Pyaar Bhare Hiraday Mein Hamein Basaaye

Magic In Tunes: 07/14/2015 – Uppongele Godavari Ugindile Chelo Vari

On the start of Godavari Pushkaralu, here is a beautiful melody about River Godavari from the 2006 hit Telugu film Godavari which was Sung by S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. Music composed by K. M. Radhakrishnan and Lyrics penned by Veturi Sundararama Murthy.

Pushkaram (Pushkaralu) is one of the Indian festival dedicated in worshipping the rivers. Rivers are treated as Goddesses who give life to the living beings with their essence thru the water. Annually, this celebration happens on the banks of the 12 major rivers in India, once in 12 years along each river. Everytime Brihaspathi (Jupiter) passes thru each zodiac sign, these celebrations happen. Thus one river per year and repeats the cycle every 12 years.

However, this year for River Godavari it is a Maha Pushkaram that occurs once every 144 years (12th recurrence of the 12-year Godavari Pushkaram cycle). It is celebrated for 12 days across all the holy places on the banks of River Godavari.

I am not much of a devotional person, but would have loved to see this celebrations in-person.
