Magic In Tunes: 05/18/2015 – Khilte Hai Gul Yahan

Shashi Kapoor, a veteran and successful Hindi actor from the famous Kapoor family was honored with Dada Saheb Phalke award, the highest award in Indian Cinema on May 10th 2015. An actor for whom career in acting was not a cakewalk even though he came from a family with successful actors / directors / producers family (father Prithviraj Kapoor and older brothers Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor). A thorough gentleman as him with style and hardwork as assets, I was very happy to see him honored this way. No better person deserved it than him. And oh, what a coincidence. May 10th happens to be Mother’s Day and he was the actor who made “Mere Paas Maan Hai” dialogue a household mantra for every son to his mother. Indeed a coincidence.

His career spans more than fifty years if you consider the years he did as a child artiste so it was difficult to pick a song to post in his honor. However, this song is special to me because this was the first song that made me want to feel the soft, wet snow in my hand. :) Now I feel it 6 months a year (we should really be careful what we ask for. Isnt it? :P). Anyways, back to the song. Sung by Kishore Kumar in the 1971 hit film Sharmilee ( = A Shy Girl), Music composed by S. D. Burman and Lyrics penned by Neeraj. Look at how stylish he is and so very very charming. Cant take eyes off him even though there is Rakhee looking like a doll in that song. Simple lines that form such a sweet melody that you can sing it even though you are not a singer.

Lyrics in Romanized Hindi:

Khilte Hain Gul Yahan, Khilke Bhikharne Ko
Khilte Hain Gul Yahan, Khilke Bhikharne Ko
Milte Hain Dil Yaha, Milke Bichhadne Ko
Khilte Hain Gul Yahan

Kal Rahe Na Rahe, Mausam Yeh Pyar Ka
Kal Ruke Na Ruke, Dhola Bahar Ka
Kal Rahe Na Rahe, Mausam Yeh Pyar Ka
Kal Ruke Na Ruke, Dhola Bahar Ka
Chaar Pal Mile Jo Aaj, Pyar Mein Guzar De
Khilte Hain Gul Yahan, Khilke Bhikharne Ko
Khilte Hain Gul Yahan

Jheelon Ke Honthon Par, Meghon Ka Raag Hai
Phoolon Ke Seene Mein, Thandi Thandi Aag Hai
Jheelon Ke Honthon Par, Meghon Ka Raag Hai
Phoolon Ke Seene Mein, Thandi Thandi Aag Hai
Dil Ke Aaine Mein Tu, Yeh Sama Utaar De
Khilte Hain Gul Yahan, Khilke Bhikharne Ko
Khilte Hain Gul Yahan

Pyaasa Hai Dil Sanam, Pyaasi Ye Raat Hai
Honthon Mein Dabi Dabi, Koi Meethi Baat Hai
Pyaasa Hai Dil Sanam, Pyaasi Ye Raat Hai
Honthon Mein Dabi Dabi, Koi Meethi Baat Hai
In Lamhon Pe Aaj Tu, Har Khushi Nisaar De
Khilte Hain Gul Yahan, Khilke Bhikharne Ko
Milte Hain Dil Yaha, Milke Bichhadne Ko
Khilte Hain Gul Yahan

Magic In Tunes: 05/19/2015 – Eruvaaka Saagaroranna Chinnannna

From the 1955 hit Telugu film Rojulu Maraayi ( = Days Have Changed) Sung by Jikki Krishnaveni. Music composed by Master Venu and Lyrics penned by Kosaraaju Raghavaiah Chowdary. This movie was the debut of veteran Hindi actor Waheeda Rehman who portrayed as the dancer in this song. She moved on to Hindi films after being noticed by Guru Dutt in this movie and established herself as a successful lead actress. The song talks about giving hope to common man that the days are changing bringing betterment to everyone’s life. Its been 60 years since this song released and I believe this holds still true even today – Common Man searching for a better life.

As I was writing this post it reminded me of another post that I had written a few years ago where I mentioned that the tune from this song was copied into another melody in Hindi here. Now the video of the song in question:
