Magic In Tunes: 05/14/2015 – Kaifi Azmi, The Rebel With A Cause

Remembering the legendery Urdu poet and lyricist, Kaifi Azmi, who changed the Indian films with Urdu poetry that addressed the social and political issues. He is aptly called a Rebel with a Cause, which is the name of his webpage as well. Remembering him on his death anniversary (May 10th) here are a few rarely heard melodies of this great poet that he had penned. Listen to them and see for yourself why he is legendary.

Tu Shok Kali Main Mast Pavan from the 1964 fim Main Suhagan Hoon ( = I Am A Married Woman) Sung by Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Its very interesting to see Ajit in a lead role here when all I remember him as the famous villain Lion in the later hindi films. Nasir Hussain also acted as the second lead in the film. This is the duet version of the song. There is a solo semi-classical in the movie which would be for another post. :)

Masti Mein Chhed Ke Tarana Koi Dil Ka from the 1964 Hindi film Haqeeqat ( = Reality) Sung by Mohd. Rafi. Music composed by Madan Mohan.

Zindagi Cigarette Ka Dhuan from the 1974 Hindi film Faaasla ( = Distance) Sung by Bhupinder. Music composed by Jaidev. A very philosophical song that draws parallels between the puff of a cigarette and life. The lead actor Raman Khanna was a lool-alike to the famous actor Rajesh Khanna. I have not seen his movies at all, but that’s what I heard about him. Couldn’t find actual video of the song either.
