Magic in Tunes: 03/11/2015 – Beshak Mandir Masjid Todo

From the 1973 hit Hindi film Bobby ( = Nickname for a girl or a boy) Sung by Narendra Chanchal. Music composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal to the Lyrics penned by Inderjeet Singh Tulsi. This song is sung in Sufi / Punjabi lines that express love and heartbreak beautifully. One has to really understand the hidden meaning to enjoy the song thoroughly which I am not an expert to milking it. For now enjoy the song:

Few more tibdits on the song:

1) Sufi is a form of Islamic concept more described as a philosophy. The language is a mix of Urdu, Parsi (Pesian) and Punjabi words but when medled together sound much much better. Its primary used in devotion songs / poems that address God directly. There are quite a few Sufi songs that I love much…but that is for another post.

2) The first two lines of this song are a form of the lines from Bulleh Shah’s poem

“Beshak Mandir Masjid Dha De, Bule Shah Ye Kehta. Par Pyar Bhara Dil Kabhi Na Todo. Is Dil Mein Dilbar Rehta"

(You may break temple or a mosque, but do not break a heart full of love because in that heart resides the beloved).

3) Bulleh Shah is a Punjab Sufi poet and also a humanist and a philosopher from the 17th century. Unfortunately he was mis-treated when alive and even when dead but now is treated with the utmost regards.

4) This was the debut song for Narendra Chanchal and so also was a debut movie for Dimple Kapadia. Both had created quite a sensation in their own ways.

5) Narendra Chanchal continued to sing devotional songs after that esp on Mata Rani.

6) Lyrics in Romanized Hindi / Sufi:

Beshaq Mandir Masjid Todo, Bulleshah Ve Kehta
Beshaq Mandir Masjid Todo, Bulleshah Ve Kehta
Par Pyaar Bhara Dil Kabhi Naa Todo, Iss Dil Mein Dilbar Rehta
Jis Palde Mein Toole Mohabbat, Jis Palde Mein Toole Mohabbat
Us Mein Chaandi Nahin Tolna
Tauba Meri Na Dholna Main Nahin Bolna
O Nahin Bolna Jaa Main Ni Bolna Jaa
O Main Nahin Bolna Jaa, Bolna Main Ni Bolna
Tauba Meri Na Dholna Main Ni Bolna

Aag Se Ishq Baraabar Dono, Par Paani Aag Bujhaaye
Aag Se Ishq Baraabar Dono, Par Paani Aag Bujhaaye
Aashiq Ke Jab Aansu Nikle, Aur Agan Lag Jaaye
Tere Saamne Baithke Rona, Tere Saamne Baithke Rona
Dil Ka Dookhda Nahin Kholna, Dholna Main Nahin Bolna
O Nahin Bolna Jaa Ve Nahin Bolna Jaa
Ve Main Nahin Bolna Jaa Dholna Main Ni Bolna
Tauba Meri Na Dholna Main Ni Bolna
Ve Main Nahin Bolna O Ve Main Nahin Bolna
Ve Main Nahin Bolna Ve Main Nahin Bolna
Ve Main Nahin Bolna Dholna Main Nahin Bolna
Nahin Bolna Ve Main Nahin Bolna
Nahin Bolna Ve Main Nahin Bolna
Nahin Bolna Ve Main Nahin Bolna

Magic in Tunes: 03/12/2015 – The Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins

This post has been due for a few weeks and dedicated to all my friends who are Star Trek lovers. It still hard to believe that we wont see Mr. Spock anymore. Yet, he has left a legacy and mountain of memories for us to cherish and enjoy. From his Vulcan greeting “Live Long and Prosper” to quotes like “It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want” or “Change is the essential process of all existence” or his simple “Fascinating”, he can never be forgotten. Just like his music. Yes, indeed, Leonard Nimoy had made quite a few music albums based on the Star Trek series. Of all the ones the one I liked most was “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins”, thanks to a friend.

The first time I watched the “Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring” movie, my friend had been buzzing in my ear about this Bilbo Baggins song and I thought he was making fun. However a few days later he had indeed found a video of the song that he was singing to prove that he wasn’t making fun of me. Quite a cute melody.

Enjoy his performance to the song composed by Charles Randolh Grean for his 1968 album Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy. He even wears his Spock hairstyle. The song talks about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins in J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit.

And here is how the stars of the The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug movie read it:

Lyrics in English:

In the middle of the earth, in the land of the Shire
There's a brave little hobbit whom we all admire
With his long wooden pipe, fuzzy woolly toes
Lives in a hobbit-hole and everybody knows him.

Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
Only three feet tall,
Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Now hobbits are a peace-lovin' folk you know
They're never in a hurry and they take things slow
They don't like to travel away from home
They just want to eat and be left alone.

But one day Bilbo was asked to go
On a big adventure to the caves below
To help some dwarves get back their gold
That was stolen by a dragon in the days of old.

Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
Only three feet tall,
Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Well he fought with the goblins!
He battled the trolls!
He riddled with Gollum!
The magic ring he stole!
He was chased by wolves,
Lost in the forest,
Escaped in a barrel from the elf-king's halls.

Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
Only three feet tall,
Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Now he's back in his home in the land of the Shire,
That brave little hobbit whom we all admire,
Just a-sittin' on a treasure of silver and gold,
A-puffin' on his pipe in his hobbit-hole.

Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
Only three feet tall,
Bilbo, Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all
(repeat ad lib)
