Magic in Tunes: 03/06/2015 – Happy Holi

Holi, the festival of colors, is the first festival celebrating the augment of Spring. This is one of the festivals that I miss so much celebrating here esp in these freezing temperatures. The colors spread life in everyone’s faces and the Indian cinema has cashed in on that in several of its movies. Whether it is a classical “Are Ja Re Hat Nathkat” or the folk mixed ”Holi Aayi Re”, be it a raunchy “Ang Se Ang Lagana” or flirty “Rang Barse Bheege Chunari”, be it a leg-mover “Balam Pichkari” or the simple dance-number “Aaj Na Chodenge Hunjoli Khelenge Hum Holi”, or the intoxicated “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar”, every song has been thoroughly enjoyed. And pretty much played a few hundred times. So, here I picked a few melodies that usually don’t play but have captured the essence of Holi very well.

First up “Holi Re” from the 2005 hit Hindi biographical historical film Mangal Pandey: The Rising which was Sung by Aamir Khan, Udit Narayan, Madhushree, Srinivas and Chinmayee. Music composed by A. R. Rahman to the Lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. This movie was a comeback for Aamir Khan who had taken hiatus once his 2001 hit film Dil Chahta Hai was released. This movie had cause several controversy and was target for both political and religious criticism.

Next up “Tan Rang Lo Ji Mann Rang Lo Ji” from the 1960 hit Hindi film Kohinoor which was Sung by Mohd. Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. Music composed by Naushad to the Lyrics penned by Shakeel Badayuni. This movie also has two other famous songs: “Do Sitaaron Ka Zameen Par Hai Milan” Sung by Mohd. Rafi and Lata Mangeskhar and “Madhuban Mein Radhika Nache Re” Sung by Mohd. Rafi. I have these in my queue to post in future. Watch out for them.

This one titled “Ararara Rang Do Sabhi Ko Ek Rang Main” is from the 1966 Hindi film Biradari ( = Fraternity / Brotherhood) was Sung by Mohammed Rafi, Prabodh Chandra Dey (Manna Dey) and Suman Kalyanpur. Music composed by Chitragupta Shrivastava to the Lyrics penned by Prem Dhawan. Shashi Kapoor was the lead but I have no idea who the actress was but imdb mentions her name as Faryal. Must have been in many side roles and not a main stream one except for this one. Notice that the Marathi-style dance that the lead dancer is performing is none other than Helen.

“Bhagi Re Bhagi Re Bhagi Brij Baala” from the 1982 multi-starrer Hindi film Rajput ( = Son of King) and was Sung by Asha Bhosle, Mahendra Kapoor and Dhiraj Kaur. Music composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal to the Lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi. A melody mixed with folk music and fun.

And finally from my favorite actor Shah Rukh Khan’s 2000 musical romantic Hindi film Mohabbatein ( = Love Stories) titled “Soni Soni Akhiyon Waali”. Sung by, ahem! an army of singers **Silly Grin** - Udit Narayan, Jaspinder Narula, Shweta Pandit, Sonali Bhatawdekar, Pritha Mazumdar, Udhbav, Manohar Shetty & Ishaan. Music composed by Jatin Lalit to the Lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi. There are quite a few of SRK’s songs with Holi theme. Since the theme is to play the unsung melodies I picked this one.
