Velluli Karam (Garlic Chili Paste)

Feeling a little bland on your tongue and want to spice up your taste, here is one excellent one usually made my mom always, whenever we used to feel a little low on the taste buds. Mind you, its a fiery one. ;-)

1 garlic bulb
4 to 5 tsps red chili powder
4 to 5 tsps cooking oil
1 small tsp jeera seeds
1 small tsp urad dal
1 small tsp mustard seeds
salt to taste
hing according to choice

  1. Peel and crush garlic cloves into smaller bits and pieces. Do not use a blender. Use a knife or rolling pin to crush them.

  2. Pour oil in a pan. Warm it. Add jeera sedds, urad dal and mustard seeds. After these get cooked, add the garlic pieces. Let it cook to light brown, then add salt and red chili powder.

  3. Mix them well and remove from flame.

  4. Store in a container.

This can be used as a side paste for any of the Indian tiffins like Dosa, Idli, etc. or can be just eaten with plain white rice. A tasty alternative to pickle. Will be fresh upto a week.

Enjoy the fiery side chutney!!!
