This post is dedicated to all my friends who are book lovers. April 23rd celebrated the 451st birth anniversary of William Shakespeare. He is one of the famous authors whose works have been made into many screen / theater / drama adaptations across the world; whose quotes are used in day to day life by most everyone without even realizing. Its fitting that I have a post for him in my music blog this year.

One quote that I often use is from Hamlet, “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio”. However, I have heard many others frequently used by people I know like “What’s in a name? A rose by any name would smell as sweet” from Romeo and Juliet; “Nothing will come of Nothing” from King Lear or “Exit pursued by a bear” from The Winter’s Tale. Oh there is so much really more in each of his works that a man cannot understand in 100 lifetimes.

Anyways, Indian film industry has not been oblivious to Shakespeare either since we have seen quite a few movies being made. Here are some melodies from a few of those movies. Vishal Bharadwaj had made three movies based on three famous plays creating a trilogy.

First one was 2003 hit film Maqbool ( = Acceptable and also Name of a Boy) based on Macbeth. Macbeth reminds me of “Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand?” and “Let not light see my black and deep desires”. However, although not a great hit, Maqbool reminds me of some powerful scenes between Irfan Khan portraying the role of Macbeth and Tabu portraying the role of Lady Macbeth along with this wedding song. Performed by Sadhana Sargam, Ustad Sultan Khan, Anuradha Sriram and Rakesh Pandit, Music composed by Vishal Bharadwaj and Lyrics penned by Gulzar.

Lyrics in Romanized Hindi / Urdu:

Jhin Min Jhini Jhin Min Jhini Jhin Min Jhin Min Jhini
Jhin Min Jhini Jhin Min Jhini Jhin Min Jhin Min Jhini
Sidhi Sadhi Bate, Bate Bholi Bhali Bilo Meri Aankho Ki Kamini

Nasirudin Uoliya Allah Ka Pyara Wo To

Aaj Rangi Hai Aye Ma Rangi Hai Ri
Mere Mahabubi Ke Ghar Rangi Hai Ri

The second in the series, Vishal Bharadwaj made Omkara ( = Sound of Om, but here used as the Name of a Boy) in 2006 based on Othello, which went to become a big hit for the director. Othello has some really great quotes like “"T'is neither here nor there” or “I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at" or “I am one who loved not wisely but too well.”. However, Omkara brings some really good music with lyrics mixed with folk language making them a little on the raunchy side. My favorite from the movie is “Beedi Jalaile Jigar Se Piya” Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, Sukhwinder Singh, Nachiketa Chakraborty and Clinton Cerejo, Music composed by Nachiketa Chakraborty and Lyrics penned by Gulzar. Essentially the song tells that if you are not satisfied go ahead and have an affair behind your lover/husband/partner. The other reason to pick this song is that this is at a point where the story takes a crucial turn on the paths of all the characters.

Lyrics in Romanized Hindi:

Na Gilaaf, Na Lehaaf
Na Gilaaf, Na Lehaaf Thandi Hawa Ke Khilaaf Sasuri
Na Gilaaf, Na Lehaaf Thandi Hawa Ke Khilaaf Sasuri
O Itni Sardi Hai Kisika Lehaaf Lehi Leh
O Jaa Padosi Ke Chuleh Se Aag Lehi Leh

Bedi Jalaile Leh Jigar Se Piya
Jigar Maabadi Aag Hai
Bedi Jalaile Leh Jigar Se Piya
Jigar Maabadi Aag Hai
Wadaa Nikari O Lab Se Piya Aah Aa
Wadaa Nikari O Lab Se Piya Jeh Duniya Badi Dhank Hai
Haan Bedi Jalaile Leh Jigar Se Piya
Jigar Maabadi Aag Hai

Na Gilaaf, Na Lehaaf Thandi Hawa Ke Khilaaf Sasuri
O Itni Sardi Hai Kisika Lehaaf Lehi Leh
O Jaa Padosi Ke Chule Se Aag Lehi Leh
O Jaa Padosi Ke Chule Se Aag Lehi Leh

Na Kasoor, Na Fatoor
Na Kasoor, Na Fatoor Bina Juraam Ke Hajoor Maar Gaye
O Maar Gaye

O Aise Ik Din Duphari Bula Liyo Re
Bandh Ghungroo Kacheri Lagaliyo Re
Bula Liyo Re, Bula Liyo Re Dupehri

Lagayilo Re, Lagayilo Re Kacheri

Angeethi Jalaile Leh Jigar Se Piya
Jigar Maabadi Aag Hai
Bedi Jalaile Leh Jigar Se Piya
Jigar Maabadi Aag Hai)

Ho Na Toh Chakuon Ki Dhaar
Ho Na Tan Raati Na Kataar
Ho Na Toh Chakuon Ki Dhaar
Ho Na Tan Raati Na Kataar
Aisa Kaate Ke Daat Ganisaar Chod De
Yeh Katayi Toh Koi Bhi Kisaan Chod De
O Aise Chalim Ka Chod De Makaan Jod De Re Bilo
Chalim Ka Chod De Makaan Jod De
Aise Chalim Ka, O Aise Chalim Ka
Aise Chalim Ka Chod De Makaan Jod De

Na Bulaya
Na Bataya
Na Bulaya, Na Bataya Maane Neend Se Jagaya Hai Re
Aise Chonkele Haath Mein Naseeb Aa Gaya

Woh Ilaychi Khilayike Kareeb Aa Gaya
Koyila Jalayi Leh Jigar Se Piya
Jigar Maa, Aag Hai

Itni Sardi Hai Kisika Lehaf Lehi Leh
O Jaa Padosi, O Jaa Padosi, Jaa Jaa Padosi
O Jaa Padosi Ke Chule Se Aag Lehi Leh

The last in the series was the 2014 hit film Haider ( = Name of a Boy) based on Hamlet. I wrote a review of the movie here. My favorite Shakespearean quote is incidentally from Hamlet. However, how can one forget the lines “To thine own self be true” or “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so” or “To be, or not to be: that is the question.” Haider, however, didn’t come with a lot of hit music but they were charming enough to listen to. I am picking the song again that is pivotal to the story. “Bismil Bismil” is performed by Shahid Kapoor portraying Princle Hamlet during the wedding of his mother with his uncle. Indeed a pivotal moment. Sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Music composed by Vishal Bharadwaj and Lyrics penned by Gulzar

Lyrics in Romanized Hindi / Urdu:

Bismil Bismil Bulbul-E-Bismil (Bismil..)
Mat Mil Mat Mil Gul Se Mat Mil (Mat Mil..)
Aye Bismil Bismil Bulbul-E-Bismil
