I remember watching this song on TV a very long time ago when I was a kid. But only thing I remembered was that it was pictured on Meena Kumari, that it was a song that opened with sunrise and that it was a black and white one. After watching several of Meena Kumari’s movies and songs in past few years I finally found this song sometime last year. Oh what pleasure it was…almost like I hit a goldmine or a jackpot, the sheer pleasure. Oh!! **Satisfied Smile**

The song is from 1961 Hindi family drama Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan pictured on Meena Kumari and Sailesh Kumar. Music composed by Sudhir Phadke to the Lyrics penned by Pt. Narendra Sharma and Sung by Lata Mageshkar.

The period when the lyrics were primarily based on Urdu, it must have been a surprise and pleasure (hopefully) to everyone to listen to a song that is straight out your Hindi text book that you use at your school. Must have been a hesitation too for the composer and singer too. None the less it made into the movie as a Bhajan and is simply magical.

Overtime this song has become a classic for Raag Bhupali that describes the morning or rather dawn so aptly per the Raag. Also it has become a showcase to all Mothers who go about their daily morning routine which was very common till the modern technology pushed into our households back home. I remember as a kid this used to be routine most of the times in my home as well as in my grandmother’s home. Modern technology and city life has made mothers very busy now (no disrespect to the modern mother as she is much more powerful now)…but here the mother is shown well busy but goes on with her activities with such simplicity and peace as if there is no rush to go anywhere. I believe that is the charm that made this song a symbol for mothers.

Lyrics in Romanized Hindi / Urdu:

Jyoti Kalash Chhalke, Jyoti Kalash Chhalke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke, Jyoti Kalash Chhalke
Huye Gulabi, Lal Sunhare Rang Dal Badal Ke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke

Ghar Aangan Van Upavan Upavan
Karti Jyoti Amrit Ke Sinchan
Mangal Ghat Dhal Ke, Mangal Ghat Dhal Ke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke

Ambar Kum Kum Kan Barsaye
Phool Pankhudiyo Par Muskaye
Bindu Tuhin Jal Ke, Bindu Tuhin Jal Ke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke, Jyoti Kalash Chhalke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke

Paat Paat Birava Hariyala
Dharti Ka Mukh Hua Ujala
Sach Sapne Kal Ke, Sach Sapne Kal Ke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke

Usha Ne Aanchal Phailaya
Faili Sukh Ki Sheetal Chhaaya
Neeche Aanchal Ke, Neeche Aanchal Ke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke, Jyoti Kalash Chhalke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke

Jyoti Yashoda Dharti Gaiyyan
Neel Gagan Gopal Kanhaiyya
Jyoti Yashoda Dharti Gaiyyan
Neel Gagan Gopal Kanhaiyya
Shyamal Chhavi Jhalke, Shyamal Chhavi Jhalke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke, Jyoti Kalash Chhalke
Jyoti Kalash Chhalke

I came across this beautiful translation of this song on google done by somebody else, sharing it here:

An Urn Of (Divine) Light Overflows.
Turned Pink, Red And Golden
Did The Colors Of Clusters Of Clouds.
An Urn Of (Divine) Light Overflows.

Home, Courtyard, Garden, Garden
(Divine) Light Irrigates Them With Nectar
Goodluck Perpetuates And Flows Thru
An Urn Of (Divine) Light Overflows

The Sky Pours Specks Of Saffron
Smiles On Flowers And Petals
Dew, Dots Of Water
An Urn Of (Divine) Light Overflows.

Leaves And Branches Are Green
The Face Of The Earth Is Radiant
The Dreams Of Tomorrow Are True
An Urn Of (Divine) Light Overflows

Dawn Has Spread A Gossamery Sheet,
Spreading Cool Shades Of Happiness.
Beneath The Gossamery Sheet,
An Urn Of (Divine) Light Overflows.

Light Yashoda Earth Mother
Blue Skies Gopal Krishna
Glimpses Of Krishna's Image (Everywhere)
An Urn Of (Divine) Light Overflows.
